Car Insurance Land Rover (Car Insurance). Why aren't radial engines used in cars? Why aren't radial engines used in cars? Radial engines have been used in vehicles, notably the WWII Sherman tank. But aren't even used in aircraft anymore for a number of reasons. Oil can accumulate in the lower cylinders and if not cleared can create an hydraulic lock during starting damaging those cylinders connecting rods, pistons and the crankshaft. Radials can't be made very compact compared with v, inline or horizontally opposed cylinder engines, the only kinds still in new production. The Wankel is not a radial, it is a rotary engine, having one or more rotors and no pistons or cylinders. It is difficult to create an overhead camshaft for each of the cylinders, compared with other cylinder configurations. This limits the engine RPM to lower values. Cooling in an automotive installation is a problem also. because they're huge, take time to warm up, and can't be easily stopped and started repeatedly without considerable wear. Too big around. It was tried back in the early days of cars. They are an awkward configuration for a car engine, prone to overheat, and much too loud. They work well in aircraft where there is much more airflow and noise is less of an issue, but not so well in an automobile. There are some cars with radial engines but not the big aircooled ones you seem to be thinking of. Generally won't fit, although a R-1820 was used in several WWII tanks. A Wankel engine is a modern rotary engine and has been used by Mazda for years. awkward shape. Too freakin big Wankel rotaries have nothing to do with radials. Aside from being too big, the blow oil as fast as gas, and are difficult to produce. An H-block aviation style engine was considered for F1 racing years ago, but the CG was too high and the project was scrapped. Auto parts : Piston To Deck Clearance Checker Acura 1995 . Land Rover . How to Replace a Stripped Lug Stud With Drum BrakesLug nuts perform the task of keeping the rim firmly mounted to the brake rotor hub or brake drum. Sometimes lug nuts come off the vehicle stripped as a result of corrosion or cross-threading. On drum brakes, the lug nuts fasten to large studs, pressed in from the reverse side of the drum. If the lug nut strips, the stud threads will suffer the same damage and require replacement. Losing too many drum brake studs to damage without replacing them can result in a wheel that cannot rotate evenly under stress. A vehicle owner can replace a stripped stud without having to purchase a new drum. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Floor jack Jack stands Tire iron Carburetor cleaner Wire brush Rags Penetrating oil Hammer Propane torch C-clamp Thick spacers Lithium grease Owner's repair manual Torque wrench Step by Step : 1 Place the vehicle in park or neutral with the emergency brake set. Use a tire iron to loosen the lug nuts on the damaged wheel just enough to break them loose. Use a floor jack to lift the end of the vehicle frame that has the damaged stud. Place two jack stands under the frame. Use the tire iron to loosen the lug nuts completely, and remove the wheel from the vehicle. If a rear drum brake has the damaged stud, release the emergency brake. 2 Tap the drum with a hammer to shock it loose. Pull the drum off and set it down. Scrub the stud and stud shaft base with a wire brush and carburetor cleaner while on the hub. Use the wire brush and carburetor cleaner to scrub the stud flange and surrounding area on the inside of the hub. Take a hammer and tap firmly on the stud head. 3 Apply penetrating oil to both sides of the stud where it connects to the back of the hub and on the front side if the stud refuses to move with the hammer hits. Let the penetrating oil soak overnight. Reapply more penetrating oil during this period. Apply a large C-clamp around the hub. Place one clamp on the top of the stud end and the other end of clamp on the backside of the hub directly next to the stud flange. 4 Twist the C-clamp handle tight. Continue to twist the C-clamp handle until the stud breaks free and moves on its splines. If the stud still refuses to move, take a propane torch and heat the hub on both sides next to the stud. Do not heat the stud, only the hub. Quickly tap the stud end firmly with a hammer, or apply the C-clamp quickly and press it out. 5 Scrub the stud hole splines in the hub with carburetor cleaner and a wire brush. Wipe it clean with a rag. Apply lithium grease to the new stud and insert into the hub hole splines. Tape it with a hammer to get it started. Place about three or four washers over the stud end. Apply grease to the topmost stud. Use your fingers to twist a good lug nut over the new stud threads until flush with the spacer. 6 Use a tire iron to screw the lug nut down, forcing the stud to seat in its spline joint. Unscrew the lug nut with the tire iron and remove the spacers. Place the brake drum back on the hub. Set the wheel back on the brake drum and screw in the lug nuts by hand. 7 Tighten the lug nuts with a tire iron only enough to get them snug. Use the floor jack to lift the vehicle and remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle and set the emergency brake. Tighten the lug nuts with a torque wrench according to manufacturer's specifications in your owner's repair manual. Tips & Warnings If you have trouble removing the stud from the drum, take it to a machine shop to have it pressed out. They can also press the new stud in. Use all of the techniques described here before you opt for machine shop assistance.
Land Rover . How to Change a Tire Without the Key LockLocking lug nuts provide an effective way of deterring thieves. They give the vehicle owner an added sense of security but make it difficult to change the tire without the key. While you may find it more difficult to do, you can change the tire without the lug nut key. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Lug nut socket set Ratchet wrench Ball-peen hammer Cheater bar Jack Jack stands Torque wrench with socket extension (optional) Step by Step : 1 Loosen the lug nuts that aren't locked. Place a socket wrench in the same size as the lug nuts over each lug nut, and turn it counterclockwise until it is about halfway off the tire. 2 Loosen the locked lug nuts. Place a socket wrench one size smaller than the lug nut directly over the top of each locked nut. Pound the socket onto the lug nut with a ball-peen hammer. Once the socket is firmly in place, attach a heavy-duty ratchet to the socket. Place the cheater bar over the ratchet to get more torque when you turn it. Simply turn the cheater bar until the lug nut loosens. 3 Lift the vehicle. Place the the jack under the frame of the car directly behind the tire that requires changing. Use the jack to raise the car slowly off the ground. Once the car is in the air, place the jack stands under the frame of the car on both sides of the tire to secure the vehicle. 4 Remove the lug nuts. Use the socket wrenches to twist the lug nuts all the way off the tire. Place them together in an easily accessible spot so you can put them back on when needed. 5 Change the tire. Simply remove the old or damaged tire, and replace it with the new tire. Put the lug nuts back on the tire, tighten them completely and lower the vehicle. Tips & Warnings Loosen the lug nuts before you raise the vehicle to keep the wheels from turning during the process. Using a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts ensures they are tight enough to hold the wheel on. While the jack holds the car up, using the jack stands helps prevent the vehicle from falling on you. *Finding the tube points Now that you know what the ball joints are, what they do, and how they work, you're probably thinking, "Fine! But how do I find the ball joints on my vehicle?" Here's where to look: Before you go down to the service station, try to find the ball joints yourself by looking under the front end of your vehicle. Trace the bar that runs from one front wheel to the other. Grease fittings are usually found at the base and top of the arms that attach your wheels to the steering linkage (these are the steering knuckles) and at the center of the steering linkage where the tie rods meet the center. Some cars have as many as eight or ten of these fittings. Others have none. Most have four to six. See Figure 16-4 for a few of places you can expect to find 770

Every service station has a lubrication manual that's published by one of the major oil companies each year. These manuals show every lube point and grease fitting for every vehicle manufactured during the year of publication. Your service station probably has the last couple of years' manuals on hand.
